The sun may still be shining, but autumn and the colder weather it brings is just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to prepare your home, health, and daily routine for the months ahead.
At Carecall, we know the colder seasons can bring extra challenges from keeping your home warm without overspending, to staying healthy and connected. A little planning now means you can feel confident, cosy, and cared for when the temperature drops.
1. Warmth Without Worry
Cold weather can affect your health as well as your comfort. Aim to keep your main living areas at around 18°C (64°F) and layer clothing to trap heat.
Small changes can make a big difference to your bills:
- Only boil the water you need in the kettle.
- Use slow cookers or air fryers for hot meals that use less energy than an oven.
- Close curtains as soon as it gets dark to keep heat in.
- Draught-proof doors and windows – simple kits are inexpensive and effective.
- If you’re on an energy meter top it up while the weather is warmer so that you build up your energy fund.
2. Safety First
Winter can mean extra hazards and a little forward planning can keep you safe:
- Get your boiler serviced before the coldest months.
- Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector regularly.
- Keep pathways clear and sprinkle grit or salt if it’s icy.
- If you go out, wear sturdy shoes with good grip and take a fully charged mobile phone.
3. Look After Your Wellbeing
Shorter, darker days can affect mood and motivation. Staying connected and active is important:
- Plan regular phone calls or meet-ups with friends and family.
- Join local activities, coffee mornings, or community warm spaces.
- Keep moving with simple exercises at home improve strength and balance.
- Eat at least one hot meal a day, keep hydrated, and stock up on easy-to-prepare foods for colder days when you might not feel like cooking.
4. Keep Your Health Covered
Before the chill really sets in, check your vaccinations are up to date:
- Flu jab – offered free to over-65s and some carers.
- COVID-19 booster – if eligible.
- Pneumonia and shingles vaccinations – speak to your GP.
